- Peak is planned in summer or not at all
- The capacity you get in November is decided by conversations held months earlier: expected volume, when it starts, the shape of the curve and what happens if it is larger than forecast. A plan agreed in October is a hope.
- Staff are trained before the volume, not during it
- A floor that hires into a peak spends the peak training. A floor that hires ahead of it spends the peak picking. That difference is where accuracy goes when volume triples, and accuracy under load is the only number that matters in December.
- The inventory build needs the space booked
- Seasonal stock arrives long before it sells, which means rack space held for months for goods that earn nothing until Q4. That is a commitment on both sides and it belongs in the plan rather than in an email in September.
- You are sharing the building
- Every account in a 3PL peaks at roughly the same time. Ask how the queue is ordered when they all arrive at once, because the honest answer to that question tells you more than any capacity figure.
The question that actually separates providers
Ask what happened last November. Not the plan, the outcome: what the volume was against forecast, what broke, what was done about it that week, and what changed for the following year. A provider that can answer that has been through it and looked at it afterwards.
- A named peak plan, agreed before the season, with the volume shape you expect written into it.
- Labour brought on and trained ahead of the curve rather than into it.
- Rack space for the inventory build committed in advance, not found in September.

What happened last November against forecast, and what changed because of it?
Talk to us in the summer.
Your expected peak shape, when it starts, and how much stock has to sit before it sells. That conversation is worth more in July than in October.
